Citizens from non-EU countries, European Economic Area (EEA)* and Switzerland that want to stay in Italy for a period longer that 90 days must have a Visa. Those staying less than 90 days are exempt from this obligation.
The Visa request must be filed within 8 days from the day of arrival in Italy. The Study visa request must be filed at an authorized Postal Office, which will provide the request form and the instructions for filling it.

Once the payment is completed a confirmation certificate of insurance can be issued by sending a copy of said payment to to INA Assitalia via fax (fax number: 06.3613626) attaching a copy of the first page of the passport. In order to receive the certificate, the person has to give his/her personal fax number upon sending the aforementioned documents and contact immediately Assitalia at the phone numbers 06.3611676 or 06.3210214.
The Postal Office will then issue a receipt valid as a visa to be kept at all times with the passport until the activation of the Electronic Visa (Passaporto Elettronico). We recommend the students to have utmost care for the receipt in order not to lose it or have it stolen.
Along with the receipt the Postal Office will give the student a convocation notice from the Police Headquarters (Questura) – Immigration Office to have their picture taken. After 6-8 weeks, the applicant will be sent a sms from a number indicated upon filling the request along with the date the visa will be issued and ready for the taking.
The receipt can be used to check on the status of his visa on www.portaleimmigrazione.it – “Area riservata stranieri” – insert Password e User ID written on the receipt (insert digits only, omitting the “-”).
